What the Cabinet approved
On 4 November, the Union Cabinet approved the Viksit Bharat Initiative for Statistical Transformation, Analytics and Research, or VISTAR. The central scheme has an announced outlay of ₹4,371.10 crore for FY 2026–27 through FY 2030–31. It covers survey execution, methodological research, digital transformation and data governance.
Why it matters
Official statistics help researchers, journalists and governments understand how conditions differ across places and groups. Survey design determines who is represented. Release schedules affect whether figures arrive in time to inform decisions. Consistent definitions let readers compare results over time.
What implementation should show
The announcement sets out ambitions for more timely and granular data and systems that can work together. Future releases will show whether those changes deliver usable public information. Readers should look for published methods, consistent series, clear revision notes and reliable release dates.
