Indian Railways reports 443.8 crore passenger journeys in seven months

The national total rose by 12.4 crore from the same April–October period a year earlier.

What the figures show

Indian Railways said it carried 443.8 crore passengers from April through October 2026, compared with 431.4 crore over the same months in 2025. The difference is 12.4 crore, or about 2.9%. Comparing the same months helps account for recurring seasonal travel patterns.

How to read the total

This is a count of passenger journeys across the railway system. A person taking a return trip or commuting repeatedly contributes multiple journeys. The national total combines different kinds of travel, so it gives a broad picture of rail use while leaving route-level demand and service conditions to more detailed data.

What the national figure leaves open

A higher total can come from more passengers, more frequent travel, or a combination of the two. The headline figure alone cannot show whether trains were more crowded, whether access improved in particular districts, or how passenger demand changed across ticket classes. Those questions require data on routes, capacity and service levels.
