What was approved
On 4 November, the Union Cabinet approved viability gap funding of ₹14,500 crore for grid-scale energy storage from FY 2026–27 through FY 2030–31. The announced split is 30 GWh of battery storage, 60 GWh of pumped storage, and 2 GWh of emerging technologies. The policy supports capacity that is still to be commissioned.
Why the mix matters
Storage moves energy across time. Batteries can charge when electricity is plentiful and discharge when it is needed. Pumped storage uses electricity to move water uphill, then releases the water through turbines later. The mix matters because projects use different sites, equipment and construction timelines. The scheme also includes a domestic content requirement for battery energy storage systems.
What to watch
The funding total describes public support. The capacity target describes how much energy the supported facilities are designed to store. Neither figure gives a commissioning date for any individual project. Look for awarded projects, completion schedules and operating performance to judge how much storage actually becomes available.
